Paul Neville - Your Federal Member for Hinkler
Governing By Headlines Leaves Locals in the LurchEmail this pageBack

The Government must stop ‘governing by headline’ and start looking after locals who want foil insulation removed from their ceilings as quickly as possible, according to Member for Hinkler Paul Neville.

Mr Neville said the government created a precedent by arranging for foil insulation to be removed from the roofs of two Cordalba homes within days of complaint, and now other local residents deserved the same deal.

“I am very pleased for Mrs Anderson and Mr Murphy that they’ve had their foil insulation inspected and removed, because I know they were both worried about the safety of their homes, and quite rightly so,” he said.

“But there are dozens, possibly hundreds, of locals in the same boat and I want to see that same deal extended to them.”

“It’s hard not to think that the lickety-split turnaround on getting the two Cordalba homes fixed was more about the government dodging bad headlines than putting people’s minds at ease.”

Mr Neville said he was working hard to find a solution for local residents who wanted the foil taken out of their ceilings.

“My office has heard from a number of distressed residents who need the same arrangements made for them, but simply can’t find anybody willing to remove foil insulation from their ceiling,” he said.

“I can well understand why electricians mightn’t want to remove the foil after they’ve done an inspection. After all, they have to think about their own safety and the safety of their workers.

“It seems in many cases getting the original installers to take it out strikes the same safety problem, and of course I wouldn’t expect any dodgy fly-by-nighters to do the right thing by their customers.”

Anyone wanting a home safety inspection of foil material installed in their ceiling should call 131 792 in the first instance. If you are unhappy with your dealings with the hotline, call Mr Neville’s office on 1300 130 238 for further investigation and followup.
